Road Safety

January 11, 2020 6:08 PM

Heather says: Heather KiddI have been working on this huge issue since about 2007 as District Councillor for Chirbury and Marton. In 2009 I was elected as the Councillor for Worthen with Shelve as well and broadened the fight. It's been a long hard struggle to get anyone to sit up and take notice about this huge issue which blights village life and makes visiting the shop, the school or the pub or even crossing a road a difficult thing. What has been achieved and markers?

  • School safety barriers installed in Chirbury and Worthen. Zigzags to prevent parking put in outside schools.
  • All our local Police are now trained to use speed guns and have access to them. There was only one for the whole of south Shropshire till I ran my campaign!
  • Speeding and road safety for our villages has been a PACT (police ) priority off and on ever since it is again now with my input.
  • Both parish Councils have worked to make road safety their priorities through their Parish plans.
  • Both Parishes have worked with me to build this into the Place Plan for Bishops Castle Area so that Planning money from developers can be spent on it.
  • The newly published Place plans re-iterate this.
  • Both Parishes have money put aside to spend on road safety.
  • We have worked with Shropshire Council on numerous occasions to work out what we need and asked for schemes to be drawn up. The one for 2011 was never delivered as it was not affordable.
  • Making the listed bridge in Brockton a priority direction bridge would make the bridge safer for young people getting the school bus. The bridge was mended but no progress was made on the footpath and priority direction.
  • I launched a 20 mph petition for outside schools over a year ago. It was well supported. Council passed a motion supporting that on 19th December 2019.
  • The Council maintain we have no accidents on the route. We do. The Police rarely record them.
  • August 1st saw a meeting at the Folly junction outside Marton. Signage new white lining and other measures were agreed. NO work has been done and no date given for it to happen despite a death on site. ( See picture)
  • We then had a public meeting on 23rd October. The promised to put together a plan for the whole of the B4386 - before Christmas. It has not materialised.

These are just a few of the issues achieved and raised over the past 12 years. I am appalled that a Council - who maintain they are short of money - are unable to support Parish Councils who want to spend local peoples money on much needed road safety projects. We would all do this ourselves but we are dependent on Shropshire Council to design and allow work on the highway! This is truly shocking
