Saturday was the start of action taken by residents of Brockton and Worthen to improve road safety in their villages. This followed a well attended public meeting which had decided to take a number of measures to improve safety.
Despite the weather around several residents and Parish Councillors (and Heather
) turned out the dig soil and grass from the pavements so that their full width can be used by mums pushing buggies, holding toddlers hands and people walking dogs.
Heather said “We have been campaigning for many years to get wider pavements in these villages Talks continue with land owners along the route about giving land so that the road and then the pavement can be widened.
“In the meantime however, residents have set to work on a series of measures. For example, many of the hedges were encroaching on the pavement and making it difficult for pedestrians to use. We trimmed back many of these but did so with great care to avoid harming any nesting birds. Much more will be done in the autumn.”
“Many thanks should go to everybody who helped out today, Benno Veenstra for organising it and for the loan of a tractors and trailer, safety equipment and Jim Dale for the sweeper. A great community effort” said Heather. “This is just the beginning but there is now real commitment from the Parish Council, residents and me to making sure there is a steady improvement in safety through the villages.”
