Following on from recent local councillors in nearby Cannock Chase the ex leader of the Conservatives in Europe has defected to the Liberal Democrats. Edward McMillan-Scott, defected to the Liberal Democrats last Friday and this move has been welcomed by Heather Kidd.
Edward McMillan Scott launched a scathing attack on the Tories and accused them of “extraordinary double standards” after expelling him from the party and yet only suspending Lord Archer, who was sentenced to four years in prison for perjury in 2001.Scott remains a vice-president of the European parliament is was a member of the Tory party for 43 years, and became increasingly frustrated at the Tories disjointed and hostile attitudes to the EU under present and past leaders, including William Hague.
Heather Kidd said “To have someone with the European experience that Edward has is a great bonus for the Liberal Democrats. His knowledge and forward thinking will help us meet the challenges of Europe in a constructive way that will not harm British jobs, security and the economy, unlike the destructive approach taken by the Tories and UKIP.”
