Community Update – cost of living, energy help, dementia support , free school meals and more

Good morning
Please see the information below on the cost of living and other community events. I hope that this email is of interest and helpful.
i. Cost of Living Help- Shropshire Council is encouraging residents worried about money to:

Use their checklist to see if there are any steps to take which may help in coping with rising costs. Recommended steps include using a benefits calculator to check that not missing out on income, exploring schemes that help with household bills, getting support with debt, and reaching out for mental health support. Use the ‘Worrying About Money’ leaflet to identify which organisation in Shropshire can offer support.
ii. Heating Oil Grant £100- as yet I have been unable to find out how this will be paid to those Shropshire Residents reliant on oil for heating. I will provide an update as soon as further information is available.
iii. Free School Meals -Children in receipt of benefits-related free school meals in Shropshire will now continue to receive support with food costs during the school holidays until the end of the spring term 2023. Each child who receives free school meals will receive £15 a week towards the cost of a school meal equivalent throughout the two-week Christmas school holidays and the February 2023 half-term holiday. Most of this support will be through a voucher to spend at a local supermarket, distributed via the children’s early years setting, school or college.
iv. – at the Church Barn Tuesdays 10 – 11.30am, Thursdays 2.30 – 4pm. No referrals are needed. Donations of non-perishable food are also welcome eg tinned and dry goods, long-life milk, cereal etc.
