Hospital Campaigners Set To Tackle Health Trust

Two local politicians who have been campaigning to preserve consultant maternity and Neonatal care in Shrewsbury have secured a meeting with the Trust on in early December.
Heather Kidd, Lib Dem Shropshire Councillor for Chirbury and Worthen, said “Adam Cairns, Chief Exec of the Trust, has asked Wyn Williams (Liberal Democrat Prospective Assembly Candidate for Montgomeryshire) and myself to meet early in December with Clinicians from the Trust to take us through their proposals.
Mr Williams added “I am greatly concerned that the Trust has simply not thought these proposals through. The currently location in Shrewsbury is central to the area that this service serves, an area which includes Powys as well as the whole of Shropshire.”
Consultant Maternity and Neonatal services are currently run from the Copthorne site in Shrewsbury.
Heather added “In a big rural area like ours it is critical that these services are delivered relatively near to the services concerned. Anything more complex than simple births are referred to this unit, including older mothers as well as those with complications.”
“Local maternity units such as Ludlow and Welshpool provide an excellent service but all complex issues are dealt with in Shrewsbury. Apart from the medical reasons it would place an added strain on families travelling from areas such as South Shropshire and Powys to have to go even further to Telford. These services must stay in Shrewsbury.”
