Heather’s Report 18th August – Council Funding and Roads

Shropshire’s roads contractors strike again!.
The road between Snailbeach and Stiperstones was closed with very little warning recently for patching. Having got a little warning, I spoke to KIER and agreed that they would delay the work for one day so that proper diversion/warning signs could be put in place. Guess what no signs, more serious hassle for residents!
It is high time that the Council ended this shambles and took road maintenance back ‘in house’ as Councils such as Cornwall have done.
Government funding for Councils.
A complete review of funding to Councils across England has now been delayed by the Government. They have been promising money for many things but not to Councils for Adult social care and all the other statutory duties carried out by them.
Unless the overall financial situation faced by Shropshire Council improves, its future looks in doubt after the 2020 -21 financial year. It either needs more money from Central Government and/or Whitehall needs to relax the cap on how much the Council can raise through Council Tax.
At the moment it is using reserves to prop up services. That can only be done once and then Shropshire will run out of enough money to be able to carry out our statutory duties.
