Don’t Freeze This Winter

It is a well known fact that the most expensive commodity for the elderly are their heating bills. But what happens when the gas or electricity supply go wrong? There can be a large bill at the end of it and maybe the
shock of finding out can all be too much. Heather Kidd would like to remind any vulnerable customers what they are entitled too.
Heather said “All gas and electricity suppliers are required, under a code of practice as part of their license conditions, to give priority services on request and with-out charge to people of pensionable age, people with disabilities and the chronically sick. All of these services are free as is a gas appliance and installation annual safety check if you receive mean tested benefit. If you have difficulty using your gas or electricity appliances, or reading your meter, your company may be able to provide special controls and adapters to help you.”
Heather has been discussing this with local Liberal Democrat councillor Tracey Huffer, who added
“Vulnerable people are entitled to a priority service in getting your gas supply restored, or if necessary, arrangements made for temporary heating and cooking facilities, provided that all adults living in your home are eligible for priority service. Shropshire social services department may be able to help in a number of ways.
They may arrange short day or full day care at a day center if you are with-out heating or light. As a last resort if you do find yourself threatened with being cut off then ring me or whoever represents you on the council. Taking up cudgels on behalf of our residents is what we are there for!!”
