WHY HAS £11.38 MILLION BEEN TURNED DOWN? ANSWERS ON BROADBAND DEMANDED

Cllr Roger Evans , Leader Of the Liberal Democrats on Shropshire Council, has demanded that Shropshire Council come clean about why it is failing to capitalise on a Government grant of £11.38m to extend broad band coverage across the County.
Roger said “Huge swathes of the rural parts of our county are at a huge economic as well as social disadvantage through not having proper broadband connection. Small and medium size businesses across our area are at an increasing disadvantage because of this*.
“Earlier this year Shropshire Council bid for extra funding from government to help provide the fast broad band that local residents and rural businesses want and need. The Government recognised the extra costs involved in bringing broadband to rural Shropshire and allocated an extra £11.38m of money providing a matching amount was found. Shropshire Council now says it has decided not to match fund any of this extra money so we, residents of Shropshire are likely to lose out on an extra £22.76m of broadband investment.
“The original deadline for agreeing to take up this offer was 30th June, and this has now gone. Fortunately the Government has extended it for a short time. In stead of decisive action all we are proffered is a woolly statement about looking for other funding to help with the improvement of roadside cabinets.**
“The Council has to get a grip on this situation and make a priority. Not only will this secure an extra £11million for the County but also significantly boost our economy.”
Cllr Evans has written to the Chief Executive asking who and why a decision was taken not to match fund. Roger is also urging a major review of the decision.
*Some for example cannot accept electronic credit card payments because the broadband speed is too low.
** The upgrades to rural cabinets at present being carried out are welcome but their impact is limited. In our large rural county only those living within 1 mile of the new cabinet will get high speed broadband. BT are refusing to give any promises or what the increase in speed will be beyond that distance.
